A tarp is triage, not treatment. Its job is to stop the loss growing while a real scope of work is priced and while your carrier processes the claim. In Gulf Coast humidity, standing water in an attic or a wet ceiling cavity can begin growing mould within a couple of days, so a fast, properly installed dry-in often saves far more than the drywall.
After a named storm makes landfall, tarping demand across a region jumps into the thousands overnight while the number of licensed crews stays the same. Expect triage: active water intrusion into occupied living space comes first. Calling early and being precise about whether water is actually entering the house is the most useful thing you can do.
